Submission of Assignments Policy

Political Science and International Relations has a policy on the submission of assignments for three reasons. The policy provides equity for students within units (i.e. those students who get work in on time are not disadvantaged) and across units (i.e. students can expect to be treated similarly by different teachers). It prepares students for the many working environments in which keeping to schedules is essential. It helps teachers arrange their marking and other responsibilities.

It is not required that work be typed. Students may submit handwritten work provided it is legible.

It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that their written assignments are submitted on time. Submission times are outlined in unit guides. All assignments are due at 12 noon on a Monday of a teaching week of a semester.

All assignments are required to be submitted with the appropriate cover sheet (available from the perspex holder in the corridor outside the Political Science and International Relations general office) attached. The assignments are to be placed through the essay slot at the Political Science and International Relations office counter.

Immediately after 12 noon on the Monday that the assignments are due, they are checked off by administrative staff against the class list, and date stamped. The assignments and the list of missing assignments are then made available to teaching staff. Students will not receive a written reminder from the department if no assignment is submitted; it is the responsibility of each student to ensure that assignments are submitted.

If health or personal problems are affecting a student’s work, the student should seek the advice of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Academic Student Advisor who will notify all course coordinators involved. Students who have not secured prior written approval for an extension either from the Academic Student Advisor or from a unit coordinator (or their tutor if the coordinator has delegated this responsibility) and who submit an assignment after the due date will incur a penalty.

Assignments which are between one and five weekdays late will incur a penalty of 2.5% of the total mark available for the assignment for each day the assignment is late. The penalty commences after 12 noon on the Monday that the assignment is due, the second day commencing at 12 noon on Tuesday, and so on.

Assignments which are more than a week late, that is, submitted after 12 noon on the Monday following the due date, can gain a maximum of only two thirds of the mark which would have been awarded if the assignment had been received on time, e.g. an assignment worth 66% if submitted on time would receive 44% if submitted more than a week late.

Students are required to submit all assignments before the beginning of the examination period. A student who fails to submit assignments may be prohibited from undertaking the examination in the unit concerned.
